Nicholas “Nicky” Johnson was born and raised in Trumbull, CT where he played 4 years of high school volleyball from 2015-2018 for Trumbull High School and 3 years of club volleyball for MEVBC from 2016-2018. He then went on to play 4 years of Men’s Club Volleyball at UMass Amherst, in which his team competed at the national tournament in Phoenix, AZ in 2022.
Nicky began his coaching career helping the THS girls team in their summer league. He then became a coach for UMass Amherst his senior year due to taking on the E-Board position of President. In 2026, Nicky is now beginning his 4th year at NEVBC as a Boys Head Coach.
Nicky’s favorite aspect to coach is Defense. As a prior libero in his career, he enjoys creating opportunities for his team to read players and react to the offense at hand.
One of the qualities that makes him unique as a coach is the energy he brings into the gym. He has a naturally loud, positive presence and creates an environment where athletes feel comfortable matching that energy to improve and have fun playing the game he loves.
Outside of coaching for NEVBC, Nicky is an Assistant Project Manager for a Construction Management firm. He is also a huge theater geek and enjoys taking the opportunity to see a show or talk about it when he can.
Volleyball has been a vital part of Nicky’s life since high school, he often shares how grateful he is that his journey continues at NEVBC alongside a family of coaches who have experienced that same impact. Never hesitate to stop and say hello when you see Nicky at our facility!
